Heavy pizzicato strings and bassoons both introduce the apprehensive melody and the steady rhythmic pulse that is so characteristic for this piece. As woodwinds take over the melody, the string sections develops more and more unnerving rhythmic figures until the listener is led into a roaring and march-like fury of orchestral power, where clashing cymbals and timpani set an unrelenting pace.
